World Back on its Axis ... Sort of

Its not been the best week to be an L.A. sports fan ... especially not one living in Houston, Texas. Going from an easy playoff series win against the Jazz for the Lakers and the best record in baseball for the Boys in Blue, to a Game One loss at the hands of the Rockets and the Fall of Manny was, well, not good.

At least now, the ships are starting to right:

And the catalysts are, of course, Kobe Bryant and...Eric Freaking Stults?

  1. Long live the blog!

You had to know that Eric freaking Stults would be the one to save the city of Los Angeles, with the help of Matt Kemp, Juan Castro, and Juan Pierre (who I picked up off waivers in the Georgetown league). Like I said, the Dodgers are going to be fine. It helps to have series against the Rockies, Padres, A's, and Mariners over the next 50 games.

As for Kobe, I am proud to say that I am a 100% bandwagon Rockets fan. I am pulling for them in this series, but I have absolutely zero sadness when they lose a game. I literally just turn the TV off and go do something else without thinking twice about it. It's a great way to be a fan - and in stark contrast to my Longhorn fandom.

Game 2 and Game 3 of the series have gone exactly how I thought. The Rockets will play good defense and fight tooth and nail, but they just don't have the offensive ability to keep up with the Lakers. And once the Lakers finish off the Rockets in this series, my interest in the NBA playoffs will plummet. At that point, I guess I'll root for Daniel Gibson to get a ring.

  2. SLAE forever!

Your Rockets stance is perfect for a fan, and how I wish I could just turn off TV sometimes and just forget about what happened.

Actually, it is a no lose proposition for the Rockets. Their showing is winning respect from the league, and giving their fans something to feel good about. There are no expectations if they lose, and if they pull off the upset they will be revered.

It is actually the exact opposite of being a Longhorns fan. It is so rare that we can indulge in the pure joy in an upset win, joy not mixed with the tinge of relief.

  3. Yao is out with a broken foot. Say goodnight to this one. See, if a central Longhorn player was ruled out of a huge game due to injury, I would be assigned to a room with padded walls right about now (either that or searching the Amazon for natural healing agents to provide to said player). Instead, now I am sorta happy that my afternoon is freed up by not having to watch the Lakers-Rockets game.

I definitely agree about the rarity of a Longhorn fan to indulge in the pure joy of an upset win. Just another reason why the 2006 Rose Bowl is the Greatest. Game. Ever.
