Although, the prospect of trading Kershaw is certainly intriguing....

  1. Yeah, I've been reading about this possibility all day long (as it would have a significant financial impact for me!).

Personally, I don't think Ricciardi really wants to trade Halladay, but he has to see what's out there. He is going to ask for an absolute king's ransom in a trade. So much so that I don't think anyone will be willing to pay it. He simply can't end up with a deal like the Twins got for Johan. A deal involving prospects like Carlos Gomez and Phil Humber just ain't good enough. If the Dodgers would be willing to include a guy like Kershaw (who we know is already a major league ready pitcher, at worst), then perhaps discussions can go forward.

I just don't know what the rest of those teams could give up to get the deal done. Forget the Yankees. The Red Sox probably have the prospects to do it - I'm sure guys like Buchholz would be attractive to Toronto, but they would have to get more than that. The Mets have nothing to give, especially since Fernando Martinez has fallen on his face in the big leagues so far.

I would love to see Halladay move to the Dodgers. He would utterly dominate that division. Consistent starts against the Giants, Padres, and Diamondbacks = happy times for the ol' fantasy squad. But alas, I just don't see it happening.

  2. I heard an interesting comment on Baseball This Morning today about the current Blue Jays management's lack of success in evaluating talent, and how that makes trading Halladay even harder. I think it brings up the good point that the Jays really need to trade for major league ready players if they are going to deal a guy like Halladay. Any prospect, no matter how "can't miss" is too risky for trading maybe the best pitcher in baseball (we all know Mr. Stockel's take on that!).

That's why the Kershaw option is intriguing. His performance in the Bigs so far provides the Jays a measuring stick, where as any of the Phillies or Red Sox prospects are much less well known commodities. I could see a package of Kershaw and a couple of infield prospects being intriguing to the Jays.

I would have to think the Jays couldn't possibly pull the trigger on a Red Sox deal, only to have to face getting beat by Halladay for at least the next two seasons.
