A Question for the Masses

And by "the masses," I of course mean my co-blogger. And perhaps the Lone Reader, should he be reading (though after the Epic Fail of Matt Holiday I don't anticipate many visits to this site by Lone Reader). And I welcome any contribution from The Law Clerk New To Burnt Orange ("TLCNTBO") should she feel compelled to visit. But other than that, its basically just you.

So, on to the question: Was Greg Davis's offensive game plan as putrid as (1) it seemed on TV; and (2) its being described by fellow bloggers throughout the interwebs? I'll confess that I don't know enough to decide if it was bad game planning by GD, lack of offensive talent at the WR and RB positions, or total fucking meltdown along the offensive line, that was the cause of our offensive struggles. I am curious what it looked like from inside the Cotton Bowl.

Thoughts?

  1. First, let me say that your tags are hilarious. Kudos to you.

As for the response from "the masses," I can answer that it was even worse in person. Of course, that all depends on your perspective and expectations heading into the game. I knew that we wouldn't have much success on offense against OU, especially after the torching we put on them last year. Their defensive personnel and coaching staff are simply too good to let that happen again. And frankly, our offense has been downright average this year (with the exception of the UTEP game).

Don't get me wrong. I wasn't quite expecting the completely feeble results we got in the first half. But I sure didn't think we'd have consistent success.

It's time to face the facts. We are a defensive football team. And I am perfectly fine with that. It's about damn time. So we don't need Mr. Davis' offense to light up the scoreboard like we have in years past. If anything, we just need to fine tune some things and CUT DOWN ON THE TURNOVERS. The mixup between Colt & Goodwin on Colt's pick cannot happen. Colt fumbling the ball heading in on the 5 yard line cannot happen. If we can be a bit more careful with the football, I don't see us dropping a game until Pasadena. Look at our schedule - who is going to score more than 20 points against us?

Inside the Cotton Bowl, it was hot, sunny, loud, crowded, frustrating, nerve-racking, and in the end, completely joyous. There's no such thing as an ugly win against those bastards. Now let's hope we put together a better offensive performance in Columbia this weekend. I think we saw some signs of life in the running game in the 2nd half, so hopefully we can build on that.

As we went through the 4th quarter in Dallas last week, I kept begging us to remain conservative on offense and run the ball. Who'd a thunk it?

  2. Lone Reader Checking in:

I have not given up visiting your site since Matt Holiday lost Game 2 of the NLDS. However, with the way things were going for the Redbirds, I was glad the misery ended on Saturday, as opposed to Sunday. No sense dragging out the inevitable.

I will pay attention this weekend as Mizzou plays host to UT; however, I very little faith an upset is in the making. Mizzou may beat UT in the first half but that is about it. So if I were a UT fan, which I am not, I would stock up on the Pepto Bizmol for the first half and the beer for the second.

  3. I suspect Lone Reader needs to remember that if Mizzou WERE to prevail this Saturday, his employment prospects would indeed be bleak.

  4. Overly Concerned UT Fan:

I suspect you are concerned beacuse large football programs have tendency to lose to Our Lady of the Blind schools. I am not concerned about my employment prospects and suspect I will be back at work on Monday with a Mizzzou team that has lost three straight. Such is the way of a sports fan from Missouri.

Did you happen to catch the article in the Chronicle this morning about the jury foreman who bamboozled Ford into settling a case for $3MM when the rest of the jury was ready to hand out a verdict for the defense? It is a good article and I believe it is in the City & State section of the paper. I brought a copy to the office and it is in the kitchen.

  5. I fully understand that UT has a tendency to play great ball until they run up against Our Lady of The Blind Junior College, at which point the fine boys from Austin manage to lose. Hence, my concern for this weekend, and my sincere hope - for your sake - that this trend does not repeat itself Saturday.

Yes, I saw that ruling. I was aware of the case when it unfolded down in the valley. It will be interesting to see if the Bar gets involved. Shady stuff goin' on.

  6. OCUTF:

Yes, I think the Bar will be intersted because of the circumstances in which the Plaintiff's attorney planted a seed about increasing his demand to $3MM once the case was given to the jury. That would suck to be interviewing the jurors afterwards and them all say, "Yeah, we had already answered 'No' on two of the three liability questions."

By the way, I am going to be playing in a charity golf tournament over the weekend. I plan on carrying the team on my back and winning the whole dang thing. So, assuming I am still allowed in the office on Monday, you will know why I will be a little sore.

  7. Texas under Mack Brown has actually done a good job of beating the teams they are supposed to beat....for the most part. However, Mack has gone on record as saying the games before and after OU week are the hardest for this team from a coaching standpoint. The confluence of post-OU letdown, a game on the road, a wounded but talented opponent, a 7pm game where the Missourians (Missourites? Missouristas?) will have had plenty of time to stock up on Grandpa's moonshine, all these things could play into a Texas upset.

I am counting on the near mythic crappiness of our offense against OU to provide the necessary motivation going into Columbia. I can see the Texas offense coming out like gangbusters just to prove a point, and that could save us. I have no fear about our defense .... which is usually the point in time when we break apart like hardened cow pies under a cowboy boot.

  8. OCUTF and Lone Reader:

I had not heard about that ruling. But that is what SLAE is here for, informing the world!!

The foreman communicated directly with the lawyers to encourage settlement?!? That's crazy.

  9. Charity golf? Is this that thing our client puts on? If so, how much is it costing me??

We're doing chores this weekend, gettin' ready for the holidays early. Probably BBQ out, though, what with all this good weather.

Friend of a friend; you know hot it goes. At the end of the day there will be golf, beer, and hot wings.

It is a nice weekend for smoking but I will only be doing ribs if Mizzou wins. Speaking of smoking, the wife agreed to let me smoke Thanksgiving dinner. I will have a ham and pork loin on the smoker while the turkey will be in the oven.

  18. A&MROCKS: Man that sounds mighty tempting, but I gotta go visit my boy up in Palestine. He's been transferred to Coffield Unit and they're pretty rough. He's up for parol again next year but you know how that goes. I might could come by Sunday if you're going to be around, but I'd have to bring the old lady with me. How does that sound?

  19. LR:

Well, I would graciously accept ribs as a consolation prize, so if Mizzou wins, you'd better come through! I probably ought to learn how to use a smoker, but I'm not allowed to sit around and drink beer anyway so what's the point?

You can't afford to be betting on 'Bama. Isn't that what got you in trouble with that loan shark over in Hueytown? Of course, anything is better than listening to the Fighting Al Gores sing "Rocky Top" over and over again after a Volunteers win. So I guess, go Bama.

  60. I am not particularly optimistic about tonight's game. I think Texas pulls it out, but it may make last week's game (which was about as attractive as a 72 year old alcoholic Okie with emphysema and a diabetic foot) look like Claudia Schiffer. Word is the Texas offense is reshuffling its WRs and going to focus on the running game. I like it in concept, but in game 7? I doubt these midseason adjustments.

Still, our defense is water tight and Mizzou just ain't that good. I'm going with Tx 26 - MU 17.

P.S. The assault on SLAE was priceless. I enjoyed our new "contributors."
